About the
Monterey Church

Every church is unique.

If you were to walk into our church today, you’ll find people from all walks of life, all ages, and all demographics.

What unites us? Our love and passion for God and His Word.

We treat the Bible with the respect that it deserves, and build our lives on its principles — day by day.

Like our lives, our church is founded on the Rock. So even though each one of us is unique, we’re building our lives to become like Jesus. That’s what it means to be disciples, and that’s who we are.

Nothing more, nothing less.

What to Expect at Our Church Services

Our Church services are simple.

On Sundays, we’ll sing some songs, read Scripture together, listen to a Bible-based sermon, and take communion together.

Wednesday nights mainly consist of Bible study. These are guided studies led by a capable teacher, but everyone is invited to participate with comments and questions.

We even have classes for your kids! We believe that the earlier a child can learn about the Bible, the deeper those spiritual roots will grow.

As our guest, you and/or your family will be made to feel welcome and treated with respect. We don’t discriminate and will always greet you with a handshake.

Worship

Every service, we sing songs that praise God and encourage each other. We do this without instruments (as the Bible teaches), but no one is ever put on the spot or made to feel uncomfortable.

Colossians 3:16

"Let the word of Christ richly dwell among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts."

Bible Teaching

We put a premium on what the Bible says, not us. When we come together, we spend time studying the text together -- either through sermons or group classes -- so we can better live His way.

Romans 10:16-17

"Not all obeyed the Gospel. For Isaiah says, 'Lord, who has believed our message?' Faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ."

Communion

Every Sunday morning, the communion is offered to every Christian in our assembly. By meditating on Christ's sacrifice, we examine our own lives against His. How can we be more like Him?

1 Corinthians 11:23-24

"For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: On the night when He was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, broke it, and said, 'This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me."

Our Beliefs

No. The Bible is clear that salvation is a free gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9).  Those verses teach us that forgiveness is a gift from God that is given through faith.

But faith isn’t without works. Both Hebrews 11:1 and James 2:14-26 claim that faith only exists when it is manifested in the lives of God’s people. Faith must be demonstrated or else it doesn’t exist.

For more on this subject, we have an entire article dedicated to what the Bible says about salvation. We encourage you to check it out!

A lot of churches worship using a live band. In fact, so many churches choose to do so that it can be odd to see a church that chooses to only sing.

We get this question a lot from visitors. The reason we don’t have a band is not because we don’t have musical members, and it’s not because we can’t afford instruments.

We choose not to have instruments because God commands us to sing (Eph. 5:18 and Col. 3;16). What pleases God is our voices — not instruments (Hebrews 13:15-16).

And if worship is intended to be honor Him, shouldn’t we give Him what He wants?

The Monterey church of Christ is a fully independent, non-denominational church that only claims Christ as its head (Ephesians 1:18-23).

As such, there is no governing body or council that we answer to. Our members make the best (Scriptural) decision we can for our own church.

Yes. Just as Acts 20:7 says that the Christians gathered together “every first day of the week” to “break bread,” so we make it a part of every Sunday service.

Communion is important. It symbolizes Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross for our sins (1 Corinthians 11:23-26). As such, it’s an honor for us to take some time every week to meditate on that fact.
